History of Pampady Block Panchayat

Pampady Block Panchayat is one of the Block Panchayats functioning as part of Kerala’s three-tier Panchayati Raj system of local self-government institutions. It was established to coordinate the development activities of the Gram Panchayats within its jurisdiction and to implement various welfare schemes of the State and Central Governments.

The Pampady region has a rich and ancient historical heritage. In ancient times, this area was part of the Kingdom of Thekkumkoor. In 1749 AD, Sree Padmanabhadasa Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma, the Maharaja of Travancore, annexed the Kingdom of Thekkumkoor to Travancore. Pampady is a region that has had human habitation for more than a thousand years.

With the introduction of the Panchayati Raj system in Kerala, Pampady developed into an important centre of rural administration and development. The Pampady Block Panchayat began functioning with the objectives of promoting rural development, agricultural progress, poverty alleviation, housing, social welfare, and the development of basic infrastructure.

At present, eight Gram Panchayats come under the jurisdiction of Pampady Block Panchayat:

• Elikkulam Gram Panchayat
• Kooroppada Gram Panchayat
• Pallikkathodu Gram Panchayat
• Pampady Gram Panchayat
• Meenadom Gram Panchayat
• Kidangoor Gram Panchayat
• Manarcad Gram Panchayat

Pampady Block Panchayat has been playing a significant role in various areas such as road development, housing schemes, sanitation activities, agricultural development, women’s empowerment, and livelihood development. Through public participation and sustainable development initiatives, the Block Panchayat has made a valuable contribution to the social and economic progress of the region.
